Age: works at all ages
Examples of abilities that are trained
- FINE MOTOR SKILLS
- VOCABULARY
- BASIC UNDERSTANDING OF MATHEMATICS
- LOGICAL THINKING
Pedagogical thoughts and challenges in the child's learning
Sorting blocks is an introductory exercise for understanding mathematics
- When the child sorts without an adult controlling the activity, it gives us the opportunity to see the child's level of development.
- When the child sorts blocks, the ability to detect similarities and differences and see patterns develops.
Your child can group by different categories:
- Colors
- Size
- Forms
- Which ones go together?
The child can make patterns with the blocks:
- Custom designs
- Following a model, following an oral instruction
Sorting blocks is an exercise for language development and motor development. Together we practice different concepts regarding:
- Color, (name of colors)
- Size, (less than, greater than, equal size...)
- Shape, (edges, corners, round-circle, square-square/rectangle, etc.)
- Number, (numerals and ordinals, one, two, three and first, second, third)
- By allowing the child, in conversation with an adult, to explain how it has sorted, the child's vocabulary develops.
- By lifting and placing blocks in different groups, the child's gross and fine motor skills are trained.
Sorting is a start to understanding mathematics!
