4. Sorting Building Blocks

Age: works at all ages

Examples of abilities that are trained

  • FINE MOTOR SKILLS
  • VOCABULARY
  • BASIC UNDERSTANDING OF MATHEMATICS
  • LOGICAL THINKING

Pedagogical thoughts and challenges in the child's learning

Sorting blocks is an introductory exercise for understanding mathematics

  • When the child sorts without an adult controlling the activity, it gives us the opportunity to see the child's level of development.
  • When the child sorts blocks, the ability to detect similarities and differences and see patterns develops.

Your child can group by different categories:

  • Colors
  • Size
  • Forms
  • Which ones go together?

The child can make patterns with the blocks:

  • Custom designs
  • Following a model, following an oral instruction

Sorting blocks is an exercise for language development and motor development. Together we practice different concepts regarding:

  • Color, (name of colors)
  • Size, (less than, greater than, equal size...)
  • Shape, (edges, corners, round-circle, square-square/rectangle, etc.)
  • Number, (numerals and ordinals, one, two, three and first, second, third)
  • By allowing the child, in conversation with an adult, to explain how it has sorted, the child's vocabulary develops.
  • By lifting and placing blocks in different groups, the child's gross and fine motor skills are trained.

Sorting is a start to understanding mathematics!
